Facebook Founder Starts A Social Network For Charities

Chris Hughes, one of the founders of Facebook and the chief digital organizer for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is putting his expertise toward a new venture called Jumo. Its purpose is to connect people with non-profits and charitable organizations.

The web site is to “do what Yelp did for restaurants,” Hughes explained, indexing charities “to help people find and evaluate them.”

Jumo would not be just about soliciting donations. Instead, Hughes said, the web site would first try to deepen ties between its users and their favorite causes.

“The more connected that an individual is to an issue they care about, the higher probability there is they will stay involved over a longer period of time,” Hughes continued.

The Jumo web site was seeded with more than 3,000 issues/groups. “Anyone with a social mission can create a page,” according to Hughes, who thinks Jumo could become a simple way for smaller charities to establish a social media presence.

Jumo will allow organizations that have been certified as tax exempt to solicit donations, to discourage fraud.
