How California Laws Protect Cyclists

As a cyclist, it’s essential to follow the laws California has in place to protect you and others from accidents. For the most part, cyclists must obey the same laws as those driving motorized vehicles. With that said, there are some specifics to be aware of that pertain to bicycles only. By following the laws set out for cyclists, you will increase the safety of yourself and those around you.

Laws That Protect Cyclists

When it comes down to laws that protect cyclists, there are several to be aware of. According to the California Bicycle Coalition, there are four main parts to biking laws. This includes where you can ride and how to properly equip your bike. You also need to know the laws around operating your bike. Furthermore, it’s important to understand how motorists are legally allowed to pass you on roadways.

Where You Can Ride

Generally speaking, if you are able to keep up with the traffic around you, you can ride there. You need to pay close attention to the laws when you are unable to keep up with the speed of traffic. You need to ride your bike in the same direction as traffic is flowing. Overall, it is essential to ride as close to the right side of the road as possible. There are exceptions to this ‘take the lane’ rule. You can move away from the right side when you need to turn left or avoid an approaching hazard. You may also deviate from the right side of the lane when the road is too narrow. Some places have lanes specifically for the use of bikers. When these lanes are present, it’s beneficial to use them whenever possible.

Legally Equipping Your Bike

When it comes to bike safety, you need to ensure your bike complies with the law. This means your bike must be able to complete a one-braked wheel skid. To ensure you comply, you need to do this on dry, level, and clean pavement. You also need to ensure your handlebars are not higher than your shoulders. You need to make sure you have the proper lighting and reflectors so others can see you in the dark.

Operating Your Bike

If you are under the age of 18, you must wear a helmet. Fastening your helmet securely so it does not slip off your head while riding is necessary. You also need to keep at least one ear free from headsets or earbuds. Additionally, you are not allowed to ride a bike under the influence of alcohol

Passing on Roadways

If you need to pass on your bicycle, you need to be aware of your surroundings. Don’t swerve or jut out in front of a moving car to pass one that is at a standstill. You need to ensure there is enough distance between you and all moving vehicles to execute the pass quickly and efficiently. When a car needs to pass you on a bike, it must be at least three feet away from you. This is to ensure your safety and prevent accidents from occurring.

Following Cycling Laws

When you take to the road as a cyclist, you need to take every precaution to comply with cycling laws. This means you need to follow the rules for passing on roadways. You also need proper equipment to operate your bike safely. You need to understand where you can ride your bike. Lastly, you need to ride with a clean mind and not under the effects of alcohol.
