Many people know about the 2016 recall of more than three million top-loading washing machines made by Samsung after reports of 730 units exploding resulting in injuries to nine people. Unfortunately, the story didn’t end there. At least not according to a Boston 25 News report indicating Samsung might not be the only washing machine maker affected by exploding parts.
This time the brand in question is Whirlpool. The report goes on to indicate the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission confirmed seven complaints related to washing machines made by Whirlpool and Whirlpool sister corporation, Maytag. In one instance local to Boston, the front-loading washing machine exploded when the 22 pound counterbalance block inside the machine shot out of the side of machine leaving a whole in the wall.
In another complaint, victims said the force of the explosion shook their house while another reported the that machine flew violently around the room. For now, all indications are that these are extremely rare instance, especially among the Whirlpool washing machinebranded machines. With millions of machines operating worldwide and only seven complaints to date.
Among the most common washing machine problems today are those related to using too much soap, causing balance problems, overloading machines, or loading them with items like rugs or comforters that also cause balance-related problems. Additionally, setting up machines on uneven floors can cause balance problems and recommends loading washing machines on solid flooring surfaces to avoid potential problems – especially on machine spin cycles.
When people have an incident in which their washing machine explodes, they should take several photographs of the machine and the damage and inform the company of the event. Additionally, it is wise to report the damage to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission by calling 1-800-638-2772. This includes information about injuries that may have occurred as a result of the exploding washing machine. WSOCTV.com also reported of one occasion in which a family complained of an exploding washing machine that knocked out the mother in which Whirlpool investigated the matter and sent the family a check, for $1,200.
It doesn’t matter what brand of washing machine consumers are dealing with, they need to be able to rely on their washing machines operating effectively and not causing injuries to their families or damage to their homes.
