Medical researchers around the globe that the red-pigmented antioxidant lycopene, found in many fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes, can play an extremely important role in reducing risks of many diseases, including cancer.
Scientists and Doctors have found that lycopene’s powerful antioxidant activity helps to prevent and repair cell damage and lower risks of several forms of cancer.
A Harvard study found that men who consumed at least 10 servings of tomato products per week had a 34% lower risk of getting prostate cancer and that women who consumed diets high in lycopene-rich tomato products had a 40% lower risk of developing clinical breast cancer.
Several other university and research center studies indicate that high consumption of lycopene may lower the risk of heart disease, atherosclerosis and even macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.
The University of North Carolina reports findings that men with higher blood-lycopene levels than other men were less likely to have heart attacks and Harvard researchers found that women with high blood levels of lycopene had a lower risk of heart disease. Lycopene may also play a role in reducing blood pressure and lowering LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.
As it turns out, stewing or cooking tomatoes weakens the fruits’ cell walls, which makes it easier for your body to absorb the lycopene. A half-cup of spaghetti sauce, for example, has as much lycopene as five medium raw tomatoes. In addition, lycopene is fat-soluble, so adding some fat to a dish by combining tomatoes and heart-healthy olive oil, the “Italiano Duo Classico” helps to enhance its absorption.
I have to confess, this is such exciting news, to know I can sit down and pig out with my favorite gourmet pasta sauce, salsa, BBQ sauce and hot sauce, add in a little olive oil and not only enjoy a perfectly awesome meal, but protect my health in the process. That’s Heaven on Earth!
