The Well Dressed Movement Takes Up Residence At Syracuse University

Something very interesting is happening on the Syracuse University campus. The Well Dressed Movement has taken up residence there.

Initially an endeavor to dress business casual for personal gain, the event has transformed itself into a mission to empower students of color on this New York campus.

Deciding to break the stereotype of black men in baggy, sagging jeans and poorly-fitting sneakers, several Syracuse men made a change to their style and dressed business professional. The young men hoped their peers would recognize the significance of the change and the benefits of dressing well at any time, rather than just waiting for a special occasion.

The students of Well Dressed are clearly demonstrating that Black Men are not required to mould themselves into the conventional images that we normally see everywhere on the street, in the media and in the movies.

These days, young people rarely dress up unless they have a very good reason. A number of like-minded Syracuse University sophomores got together and decided to randomly dress up on a Wednesday, with the aim of showing that a special reason is not required for anyone to dress well.

The men of Well Dressed say, “when you look good, you feel good,” so they are dressing well without needing a reason or a special occasion. The Well Dressed Men are all about benefiting themselves and their peers, and they hope to influence the wider public in the way people view Black men.

The Well Dressed movement may be starting with minority men, but that is not the end. They want to influence individuals of all genders and races to become involved and support the movement to make a difference.
