Night Watch: ANKARA – This could signal a major shift in regional relations. Turkish Daily News is reporting the Serbian Chief of General Staff Lieutenant-General Zdravko Ponos made a proposal yesterday in Ankara to the Turkish Chief of General Staff General Yasar Buyukanit on Belgrade’s offer to sign a Defence and Security agreement with Turkey. This is the first meeting of both governments’ military leaders since Yugoslavia’s division in 1991. There is no word on how Ankara has responded but I suspect Belgrade knows Turkey will give it serious consideration perhaps due to discussions their diplomats and foreign policy officials may already have had on their serious concerns over the threat Serbia and the region face with various Albanian militia, Islamic and criminal groups, supported by the Albanian government in Tirana and Pristina. Ankara-Belgrade are also aware Brussels – Vienna – Washington agrees Kosovo should become independent and seems eager to blame Belgrade for this current regional crisis as they have been doing since 1991. Brussels is headquarters to both NATO and the European Union (EU) but member nations in both organizations are seriously divided on the issue, which means neither organization is going to survive the war, something both Ankara-Belgrade also know as does Tehran-Athens. Vienna is headquarters to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), whose membership is vague and its decision making amorphous, but it provides Vienna an opportunity to control and area it used to rule before the First World War 1914-18 and this is the region where the war began. Vienna actively supported Nazi Germany’s occupation of Yugoslavia beginning in 1941, during World War II 1939-45, and it became one of the major regional theatres of World War III when NATO began its bombing campaign against Bosnian Serbs in 1994. Washington, with its infantile sense of leadership, has publicly endorsed Kosovo independence, which means Washington, has begun to burn bridges here as it has in West Asia (Middle East).
Ankara-Belgrade also know other regional capitals have the same view and sense the same oppressive-sinister military threat from both NATO and Albanian militia-Islamic groups fighting for either Greater Albania or the Jihad. Turkey and Serbia also welcome the support of governments outside the region, principally Tehran-Moscow. Iran knows although assisting Albanians is helpful in starting the next war and Tehran will encourage the Islamic extremists to experience martyrdom, but Turkey-Serbia-Greece provide more powerful regional partners in working against a divided NATO-EU and in ending the investigation into Iran’s nuclear weapons program by the UN agency based in Vienna.
