Cyclebration Races Off to a Great Start

Cyclebration certainly lived up to it’s name this weekend, a great celebration of cycling, thanks to organizers, volunteers, sponsors, riders and spectators.

Billed as Northern California’s most family friendly weekend of bicycle riding and racing, it was exactly that, centered around the trails, lakes and history of Folsom. Thirteen different events, from Time Trials to a Cruiser Ride, gave riders of all ages and levels a chance to participate.

Sunday morning was beautiful. Temperatures were expected to be perfect for the racing day, and they were similar to Saturday, which had the added surprise of a few light showers, and a gust of wind, early on.

Race morning started well, everything looking good until the start/finish arch developed a leak and had to be taken down. An expert arch repair team sewed up the leak and the arch was reinflated and took up it’s place between races.

Mens, womens and junior races all went well. Organization was good, with just a few minor holdups here and there, to be expected with such an event-packed day.

Everyone I spoke to down at the track said they enjoyed the day, the weather, the sportsmanship and camaraderie. Riders said the two hairpin bends really made the race, as well as the varied surfaces, grades and turns.

There were one or two minor falls, including one down on the big bridge, where a rider was injured.

There were some traffic problems that organizers need to look at handling better for next year, but overall, a fantastic event.
