The Obama Nation: Book Review

“In 2004, I coauthored Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out against John Kerry… In this book, I intend to argue that an Obama presidency would lead us into an ‘Obama Nation’. The play on words is fully intended, because Obama’s radical leftist politics, driven by the cult of personality he has intentionally manufactured, would be an abomination in that the result of those policies would be to lead the United States in a costly and self-destructive direction, both at home and abroad.”

– Excerpted from the Preface (pages ix-x)

Senator John Kerry’s defeat four years ago was substantially blamed on the revelations contained in Unfit for Command, a book which questioned the decorated Vietnam veteran’s patriotism and military record. Released shortly before the presidential election, the #1 New York Times’ best seller swayed enough voters to turn the tide, even though many of its outrageous allegations would belatedly be dismissed as sheer nonsense.

Nonetheless, Kerry’s loss led to the coining of the term “Swift Boated” to refer to any candidate whose political campaign has been successfully torpedoed by similar dirty tricks. Now, Jerome Corsi, author of Unfit for Command, has just published an 11th hour attack aimed at sabotaging Senator Barack Obama’s attempt to win the White House.

And why did he wait until the last minute to launch his latest attack? For two reasons: First, since this leaves the Democratic candidate precious little time to defend himself, and secondly, because “most people don’t pay attention to elections until they have to. Voters, unlike political junkies, pay attention only in the fall.”

Entitled The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, this unabashedly-partisan, right-wing screed focuses on everything from Obama’s father and step-father’s Muslim backgrounds to his alleged connections to Communists in both Hawaii and Chicago to his affiliation with Reverend Jeremiah Wright to his supposed support of an Islamic socialist presidential candidate in Kenya. Basically, the idea is to keep insinuating that Barack might not be patriotic or Christian enough via baseless claims like, “Obama hates the military so much that he might leave the United States defenseless against our enemies” and “Obama’s experience with Islam predisposes him to Islam in a way that is reflective of his political associates, his political advisors, and his specific policies regarding the Middle East.”

No need to quote the book any further on the chance that some might mistake this pack of lies for the truth. Let’s just pray that this transparent attempt to Swift Boat Barack fails miserably.
