Natural Remedies for the Home: 15 Popular Solutions

Lets be honest – your health isn’t always a top priority. Unless you’re facing an immediate crisis, you probably don’t worry much about what goes into your body. When you get sick or have another ailment, it’s tempting to stock up on medicines filled with unknown chemicals.

Recently, however, the world has begun shifting towards more eco-friendly, natural alternatives. Research shows that more than half of people prefer natural beauty products, food, and medication. These people will check the labels of medication, and put them back if they seem too processed.

Thanks to growing interest in natural products, more and more home remedies have emerged, both for common and unique symptoms.

Here are some of the top remedies every household should try:

  1. Cure Canker Sores

Canker sores are small ulcers or lesions that appear temporarily on the inside of your mouth. They can be very painful, but can be cured with gel or juice from an aloe vera leaf. A honey and turmeric paste has also proven useful in this situation.

  1. Help Your Heart

A daily sip of pomegranate juice can fortify the heart for those suffering from low blood pressure and other heart problems. Also, a bite of dark chocolate before bed is a great treat that can boost your heart’s function.

  1. Ditch the Gas

After you eat a heavy meal, do you worry about stomach issues? Swallow a flake of garlic with water in the morning to assuage your gastrointestinal problems. Fennel seeds boiled in a pot of water also make a very effective home remedy for gas and bloating.

  1. Relieve Headaches

To get rid of headaches, crush watermelon flesh into a pulp, and drink the concoction daily. The water content, as well as the antioxidants in the liquid, do wonders for eliminating chronic headaches. Peppermint essential oils can also be used to relax muscles and relieve head pain.

  1. Boost Your Immune System

Lemon is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C, and this vitamin is known to help your immune system. Drink freshly squeezed lemon juice mixed with warm water to enhance your antibodies and help digestion. Avoid adding sugar, since that will counteract the effects of the vitamin-rich fruit.

  1. Treat Hangovers

Mix bananas with milk and honey for quick relief after a long night out. The cold mixture will soothe the stomach lining and build up your blood sugar levels.

  1. Stop the Cough

There are several remedies that can help your cough. If the cough is severe, mix tulsi juice, garlic juice, and honey. Then, take by teaspoon every few hours. Another remedy can be found by straining a cooked onion and honey mixture. If the taste of either remedies makes you gag, try boiling dates in milk and drinking the mixture several times daily.

  1. Banish Dark Circles

When you’re sleep deprived, you don’t want anyone to know – luckily this home remedy can help. Blend together tomatoes, lemon juice, and turmeric powder until it forms a thick paste. Apply gently around the eyes, leave it on for 15 minutes, and rinse. The results won’t be immediate, but performing this ritual several times a week will help the dark circles disappear within a month.

  1. Solve a Sore Throat

You might have heard that gargling salt water is good for a sore throat, but it’s even better if you add a pinch of turmeric to the mix. Make sure you don’t drink or eat anything for at least 30 minutes, so the spices can do their work.

  1. Reduce Scarring

After you’ve treated your scrapes, burns, and cuts, apply honey to the affected spot daily. This will help to smooth the scars and make them less visible.

  1. Hydrate a Dry Scalp

Dandruff occurs when your scalp is too dry. To infuse some moisture, try applying tea tree oil and giving yourself a good head massage for about 15 minutes. This will strengthen the roots and nourish the scalp. Make sure you look for hydrating shampoos and conditioners, too.

  1. Fight the Cramps

For women, menstrual cycles can be brutal. However, it’s much easier to handle them when you can treat your cramps. Rosemary tea, flaxseed, and black Cohosh have all shown positive results in curing cramps.

  1. Prevent Cancer

Garlic, green tea, and fresh fruits and vegetables have all been shown to help overall health and fight off carcinogens with their powerful antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.

  1. Decrease Stress and Anxiety

Instead of popping pills with terrible side effects, use lavender oil in your bathwater to calm your anxiety. Lemon balm tea and St. Johns Wort have also been used with success in treating stress, depression, and anxiety.

  1. Whiten Teeth

Oil pulling every morning with coconut oil has worked for thousands of people when it comes to whitening teeth. It has also proven, according to Dental News Digest, to be much better for your enamel than bleach and other whitening agents, and with far fewer processed side effects.
