Assam State Pays Homage to Musical Legend Bhupen Hazarika

Guwahati: People of Assam and other parts of India paid homage to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 87th birth anniversary on Sunday.

Several organizations including All Assam Students Union (AASU) organized a day long programme in Guwahati, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Tezpur and paid homage to the musical legend.

AASU organizaed a “Uddipana” programme at Dighalipukhuri in the city near by Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s statue.

In Lakhimpur, a statue of the legend of Assam was unveiled.

Famous bollywood singer Usha Mangeshkar took part in the program.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika died on November 5, 2010.

The Assam state government announced that the birth day of the musical maestro will be celebrated as Integration day in the state from next year.

Several organizations and people of Assam demanded that the Union government give the prestigious “Bharat Ratna” award to Dr Bhupen Hazarika posthumously.
