Saving Serious Money On Future Car Repairs

Owning a car automatically means that eventually you will need to pay for repairs. Reducing how much you are going to have to pay is all about the preventive maintenance routine that you set up. It is not enough to find a car wash nearby and take the car to the mechanic when problems appear. You should do a lot more than that. If you are interested in saving money in the future, you should know about the following.

Perform Your Own Regular Inspections

Simple inspections you can do yourself can save a lot of money in the long run. Be sure to check regularly that the lights work and check tire pressure every month. Correct tire pressure has the added benefit of offering better fuel mileage. The tires need to have suitable tread and check wear indicators. Investigate further, when you notice that something is not as it should be.

Check Your Fluid Levels

Learning how to change fluids is not difficult but few car owners want to have such information. Even if you don’t, the tank levels can still be checked. All you really need is to check the owner’s manual or to open the hood and look around. Do not ignore the situation at any cost if a leak is present.

Inspect Serpentine Belts And Replace Whenever Necessary

Timing Belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles or so but a serpentine belt does need to be replaced sooner. Numbers are included in the owner manual and when this is not accessible, the information can be found online. Use the recommendation that you find as guideline. Mechanics have to inspect belts when it is time to get the belts checked according to driven mileage.

Check Oil And Regularly Change It

There are different systems used to check oil levels and it is not at all difficult to see what your vehicle uses. It is important to know the difference between murky, muddy oil and clean oil. When there are engine problems, they often show up in the oil. Universal recommendations cannot be given but the important thing is to be careful about following guidelines you find online. Check often and be sure everything is ok according to the manual. When an oil change is needed, take the car to a mechanic or do it yourself if you know how. Dispose of the oil safely and correctly, depending on local rules.

Clean Battery Contracts

Many modern batteries do not require maintenance but be sure the battery does not leak and that contacts do not present mineral buildup. Use battery cleaning brushes to clean contacts for just a few dollars. Battery testers and jump start leads may be useful. They are usually really inexpensive.

Replace Windshield Wipers If The View Is Obstructed

Most car owners ignore wipers not working well until serious problems are seen. Replacement wipers are incredibly cheap and generally easy to replace. The last thing you want to have happen is wipers failing in a heavy downpour. Visibility is highly important since when you do not have a clear view of the road, you may be involved in an accident. That would potentially cause much more than just minor car repairs.
