Three People Killed, 15 Injured in Goalpara Violence

At least three people were killed and 15 others injured when police opened fire at a mob which turned violent after recovering a body of Taher Ali in Assam’s Goalpara district on Monday, officials said.

The incident took place at Mailapathar area near Rakhyasini forest in district, where local people protested against the administration following a recovery of the dead body of Taher Ali (46) who was missing since April 28.

The mob turned violent and attacked the police personnel by sticks, stone and sharp weapons.

“The mob threw stones to the security personnel and damaged several vehicles, where at least five security personnel were injured,” a top police official said.

Reports say the situation turned more violent and security forces forced to open fire at the mob to control the situation.

Two people were killed on the spot and 10 others injured in police firing incident.

The injured people and security personnel were admitted to Goalpara civil hospital and Guwahati medical college hospital.

Top police officials rushed to the area.

Meanwhile, district administration has imposed curfew in the tense area.
