Three Killed After School Bus Falls Into Gorge in Kashmir

Srinagar-A teacher and student were among three persons killed and more than 44 others were injured on Wednesday when a school bus carrying students on a picnic trip plunged into a gorge near Baba Reshi in Indian administered Kashmir.

Police said a bus bearing registration number JKE- 6144 carrying students and staff members of Iqra Educational Institute of Khumriyal Lolab in Kupwara district, which was on its way to Babareshi shrine, fell into a deep gorge at Nambalnard in North at around 1130 hours, killing two persons on the spot and injuring 45 others.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where one of the critically injured succumbed to injuries.

The deceased were identified as Jahangir Ahmad Dar (teacher), 7th class student Owais Manzoor and driver of the ill-fated bus Ather Hussain Dar.

“All the injured students and teachers were rushed to nearby hospital. The 24 injured were referred to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment,” a health official said.

He said doctors attending the patients in Srinagar hospitals have termed condition of seven of them as critical.

Meanwhile, Director School Education (DSE) Shafi Rather has withdrawn registration of the school for taking school children for picnic and defying government order for facilitating an outing without permission of the education department.

He asked all heads of the government/private institutions of Kashmir to take utmost care about the safety of students during such outings. “The delinquent heads of the institutions shall be dealt with severely,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed deep grief over loss of lives in a road accident on Tangmarg-Gulmarg road in Baramulla district.

In his condolence message, he said that he has been deeply saddened to hear about the loss of children in the road accident.

He conveyed his heartfelt condolence and sympathy to the bereaved family and showed his solidarity with them at this movement of grief and sorrow.
