Soldier Killed in Kashmir Gunfight

Srinagar, May 13: An Indian army soldier was killed in a gunfight with militants in Indian administered Kashmir on Friday.

Police sources said army and policemen had laid an ambush in Daroosa village in the Tikkipora area of Kupwara in North Kashmir last night after receiving inputs about presence of militants there.

“While the soldiers were maintaining the guard, they noticed movement of some militants in the area in the wee hours this morning. The militants were challenged and asked to surrender. However, they turned down the offer and fired from AK-48 rifles towards the soldiers. The fire was returned and in the ensuing gunfight, an army man was critically injured. He was evacuated to army hospital, where he expired,” they said.

The deceased was identified as Havaldar Mohsin Shiekh.

Sources said reinforcement was rushed to the area and the soldiers have launched a massive manhunt to track down the militants responsible for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.
