Rhino Poacher Killed in Kaziranga

Security forces killed a rhino poacher and recovered arms and ammunition, during an encounter in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park on Friday morning, officials said.

Reports say acting on a tip-off, police and forest guards jointly launched a search operation inside the park at Bornalani under Bagori range on Friday morning.

“We were informed based on our intelligence report that a poacher team planned to take endangered rhinos inside the park and we immediately launched the operation,” Kaziranga Divisional Forest Officer, Dibyadhar Gogoi said.

When the security forces reached the area, the poacher fired. Both camps fired and a poacher died there, according to Park officials.

Security forces recovered one 303 rifle, several rounds of live ammunition from the slain poacher.

Meanwhile, Park authorities claimed that one more poacher was killed during the encounter, but his body was sill missing.

Last week, security forces arrested two poachers from Biswanathghat, located near the National park, who were trying to entered the park.

There are 2290 one horned rhinoceros in the Kaziranga National Park, a recent census report revealed.
