Militants Set Ablaze Five Schools in Goalpara

Large scale violence erupted in lower Assam ahead of the third and final phase of the panchayat poll.

Miscreants set ablaze five schools and several houses in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) areas in Goalpara district on Sunday evening, officials said.

Unidentified persons set ablaze the Damara LP School, Habanggiri LP School under Dudhnoi police station and Goroimari LP School, Dariduri MV School and Chutki LP School.

“The fire damaged the school buildings,” a district administration official said.

The miscreants also torched several houses at Boko Singora weekly market on Sunday evening.

On Saturday night, miscreants set two schools on fire, one Gaon Panchayat office, one wooden bridge and a camp of CRPF in the district.

Top police officials rushed to the disrupted areas and launched search operation.

Several organizations have called a 36 hours public curfew in RHAC area as panchayat poll continues.

Meanwhile, the campaign of the third phase poll concluded on Sunday.

The poll will be held in eight districts of the state on February 12 for the 135 seats of Zila Parishad, 743 seats of Anchalik Parishad, 743 seats of Gaon Panchayat President and 7430 seats of Gaon Panchayat member.
