Meghalaya Woman Commits Suicide Inside Guwahati Police Station

A woman from Shillong in Meghalaya allegedly committed suicide inside a police station toilet in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district on Sunday morning.

The womain, 39-year old Victoria Dayoun Kharkongor lived at 16(a) Nongrimbah West of Shillong in Meghalaya. She had been at the International Hospital in Guwahati, and was reported to be in an agitated condition. The attending doctor handed her over to poice and they took her to Dispur police station in Guwahati, where she was later found dead.

Guwahati city police commissioner, Mukesh Agarwal, said the woman was rushed to the city hospital.

“A security supervisor of International Hospital in Guwahati had appeared at Dispur police station at around 8:30 pm on Sunday and informed that a woman was found in a restless condition. Immediately O/C of Dispur police station attended ot the matter. On their arrival at the hospital, the attending doctor handed over the woman to police personnel with a report and police staff brought her to police station. At around 10:20 pm the woman went to a toilet attached with the police station but when she did not come out, the police personnel broke the door and found her hanging inside the toilet,” the top police official said.

Police rushed the woman to Guwahati Medical College hospital, but a doctor there declared her dead.

Police have ascertained her identity after they recovered her handbag with PAN card, Electoral Registration Card and other items.

Guwahati city police commissioner has ordered an investigation into the incident by the Joint police commissioner NMASF Haque. He has asked for a report to be issued within 48 hours.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samittee leader Akhil Gogoi alleged that police killed the woman after raping her.

The KMSS leader demanded there be a high level inquiry into the incident.

UPDATE: Two Inspectors Suspended Over Custodial Death of Meghalaya Woman

Two Sub Inspectors have been suspended for negligence in the woman’s death, but not rape or murder, after the police investigation. An external enquiry has been demanded by the KMSS leader, a magistrate and a number of Meghalaya organizations.
