Karbi Anglong Showcases Organic Produce in Assam Int’l Agro-Horticultural Show

K A Strawberry and King Chilli Showcased in international Agro-Horticultural Show

Diphu January 30: Agriculture department under administrative control of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council has decided to convene a large contingent of departmental officers, technicians and progressive farmers to showcase the progress and prospects of agro-horticultural development in the hilly region of the district at the second Assam International Agro-Horticultural show.

The agri show will be held from 10th February at Khanapara, Guwahati. The four-day extravaganza will conclude on 14th February.

Farmers and horticulture entrepreneurs will take part in the exhibition, contests and attend world class training, colloquium and assembly of purchasers and vendors.

“Karbi Anglong has a large variety of organic produce to showcase in this International Agro-Horticultural show. In fact our Ginger, Turmeric, King Chile, Passion Fruit and Strawberry have earned acclamation in international markets, and our thrust will be in these products. We have planned to show Khusbo- Basmati and Kunkuni Joha rice which are endemic of this region. Our horticultural produce which will be put-up for display and trade will be organic Pineapple and Orange. Traditional Karbi vegetable Joha Pumpkin, multiple faced Yan or Colocasia and organic molasses which are produced in large areas of this district will be displayed in the show,” Mahesh Rajbangsi District Agriculture Officer of Karbi Anglong said.

Karbi Anglong autonomous district with 10434 square kilometres of hills and flat land make up the largest district of Assam. It is the second biggest district of the nation which is mostly covered with forest and rubber plantation but net cropped area is 2, 47,713 hectares out of which total irrigated area is 13761 hectares.

More than 85% of the population depends on agriculture maize and rice as the main food crop. Grams, oilseeds are grown in large areas. Sugarcane is also widely cultivated in this district. According to departmental records, sugarcane covers an area of 8320 hectares. Spices such as garlic, black pepper, and coriander are also produced in large quantity. Due to diverse soil and agro climatic conditions, a wide variety of horticultural and crops ranging from fruits crops, vegetables, spices and ingeniously grown medicinal plants are produced here.

“An encouraging point of our agricultural produce is that we are giving maximum thrust on organic cultivation and to increase production advanced technologies are constantly affianced. Around one hundred progressive farmers will accompany our officers to the International Agro-Horticultural show. They will attain some training of international standard,” Mahesh Rajbangsi said.

The district’s strawberry entrepreneurs have already succeeded in growing excellent quality fruit and within 2 years strawberry cultivation has increased from 1 hectare to 10 hectares.
