Hindu Militant Killed in Kashmir Firefight

Srinagar, July 26: A Hindu militant owing allegiance to Kashmir’s largest militant group Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in a gunfight with Indian army in Kishtwar area of Indian administered Kashmir on Tuesday.

Police sources said acting on a specific information about the presence of some militant commanders, police and army soldiers laid siege around Thachna-Gokund forests in Nawapachi belt in mountainous Kishtwar region of Kashmir in the wee hours today..

“As the soldiers closed in around a militant hideout, the militants hiding inside fired from automatic weapons towards the search party. The fire was returned by the soldiers, triggering a gunfight. In the ensuing gunfight, which continued for nearly three hours, a Hindu militant of Hizbul Mujahideen was killed. The combing operation was going on,” they said.

They identified the deceased militant as Subash Shan alias Wasif. “An AK-47 rifle, two magazines, 37 ammunition rounds and one radio set were recovered from the encounter spot,” they said.

Police said Subash was involved in the killing of three security men and three civilians. “He had joined HM in July 2001 and at present was acting as Deputy Divisional Commander of the outfit in Kashmir,” a police official said and termed Subash’s killing as a big boost for the security forces and a big blow to the militant outfit.
