Congress Leads in Assam Panchayat Poll Results

The ruling Congress is likely to take command in major panchayats in Assam as it lead more than 200 seats of Zila Parishad (ZP) in available trends of panchayat poll results on Friday.

All the results are yet to be declared, but the ruling party won 61 seats of ZP followed by AIUDF, AGP, BJP, officials said.

According to the latest result of the panchayat poll, while counting votes has began in 385 centres in 41 election sub-division under tight security vigil on Thursday, Congress had won 61 ZP members and leading in 140 seats.

“Apart from Congress, the main opposition party of the state AIUDF had won 24 ZP members, AGP won 8 and BJP had won in 4 seats,” an official of state election commission said.

A similar trend also goes to Congress in Anchalik Parishad (AP) members, Gaon Panchayat (GP) President and Gaon Panchayat (GP)members.

“The counting is still going on and the results of ZP members, AP members, GP president and GP members will be declared on Friday evening,” the state election commission official said.

A total of 93,261 candidates of various parties had contested and 1,27,56,804 voters exercised their rights in the panchayat poll, which was held in three phases on January 30, February 6 and February 12 respectively.

The third phase of polls were marked by large scale of violence in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) areas in Goalpara district, where at least 20 people were killed and 70 others injured.
