The citizens of Pakistan today celebrate the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Lahore Resolution which laid the foundation for the creation of Pakistan.

The Lahore Resolution was a formal political statement adopted by the Muslim League on the occasion of its three-day general session on March 22-24, 1940 that called for the creation of ‘independent states’ for Muslims in British India, according to Wikipedia.

The constituent units of the states were to be autonomous and sovereign and this was then interpreted as a call for a separate Muslim state which was called “Pakistan.”

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Pakistan National Day.

“Pakistan and the United States have a rich history of cooperation.” -Ms. Clinton

Both countries have worked together from the Tarbela Da

m project that has helped light Pakistan’s growing cities and power its industries.

Both countries also cooperated to the founding of the Lahore University of Management Sciences and Karachi’s Institute for Business Administration that have educated so many of Pakistani leaders.

“To the thousands of Pakistanis who were helped by U.S. and Pakistani forces after the devastating earthquake of 2005 and during the floods of 2010 and 2011, Pakistan and the United States have a rich history of cooperation.” -Ms. Clinton

The United States is committed to continuing the engagement and support as both nations work to build peace and prosperity in Pakistan and the region, Ms. Clinton.

The United States appreciates the work that all political leaders, teachers, bloggers, Muslim and minority religious leaders, gender activists, business leaders, and journalists are doing to promote peace and tolerance.

“As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, know that the people of the United States stand with you and we look forward to strengthening our friendship even more in the years to come.” -Ms. Clinton

The United States continues to assert the relevance of cooperation with Pakistan to American national security.

On March 2009, President Obama, President Karzai, President Zardari, and senior members of their governments reaffirmed their commitments to a peaceful and cooperative future for Afghanistan and Pakistan and to combat the spread of extremism and terrorism.

The three countries resolved to strengthen their strategic partnership based on a shared commitment toward promoting enduring peace, security, stability and economic cooperation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They also expressed a shared desire to deepen the strategic dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan and to continue a trilateral dialogue. The United States reaffirmed its strong commitment to the strategic partnerships at the bilateral level with both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
