Bharatiya Janata Party Sweeps India’s Lok Sabha Elections: Photostory

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party, lead by Narendra Modi has gained a landslide victory in the country’s multi-day general election. Plagued by corruption, the incumbent Congress Party only held 63 seats of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the BJP coalition won 334 seats.

Modi, currently the chief minister of the western state of Gujarat, leads the BJP, which is a Hindu nationalist and pro-business party. Modi is often seen as a divisive figure, antagonistic to the minority muslim population.

The 64 year old Modi will be the 14th Prime Minister of India, thanks to the votes of more than 560 million Indian voters who took part in the 6-day general election, that was held in several stages from April 7th to the 12th of May. Turnout was estimated at around 66.3 percent.
