Assam Government Fails to Protect Wild Animals in Kaziranga

Another Rhino Killed

Assam government and state forest department have failed to protect wild animals in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) as poachers killed another one horned rhinoceros in the park on Friday and managed to flee with the horn.

According to report, poachers killed the rhino at Mokorajuli area near Bakse hill under Burapahar forest range office in the park.

“The forest guards found the bullet injuries marked in the rhino’s body at Mokorajuli area,” a park official said.

The poachers had managed to flee with the horn after killing the rhino.

Poachers have killed 16 rhinos this year, where 22 rhinos were poached in Kaziranga last year.

Several organizations and political parties have urged the state government and Union government to protect wild animals in the park.

Recently, the state forest department had deployed 300 armed jawans of Assam Forest Protection Force (AFPF) in the park to protect wild animals and controlling the poaching activities.

Meanwhile, on Friday, few MLAs of opposion parties of Assam legislative assembly had demanded a hand over of the Kaziranga’s security to private agencies.

“The state government and forest department have totally failed to protect wild animals and controlling poaching activities in Kaziranga. So we have demanded that, the Kaziranga’s security would be handed over to private agencies,” BJP MLA Manoranjan Das said.
