9 Killed By Lightning in Assam

Guwahati, 4 April (IBNS): At least 9 people were killed including a child and four others injured, when lightning struck them in different incidents in Assam on Wednesday, officials said.

There were thunderstorms followed by heavy rainfall in different parts of the state.

The incidents happened in Kamrup (Rural), Goalpara, Udalguri and Sonitpur district.

In Kamrup (Rural) district, two people were killed including a farmer at the Palashbari and Bijoynagar areas, police said.

“A farmer named Prafulla Kalita of Bijoynagar area was struck by a thunderbolt, when he was working in his paddy field and a 55 year old man was killed at Palashbari area,” a police official said.

Two others were killed and two others injured in Goalpara district.

A student Ankita Rai of Guabari area and Amardeep Rabha of Dhupdhara area in the same district died on the spot at their residence compound in lightning strikes as heavy rains continued to lash the region.

In Udalguri district, two incidents occurred at Bhimakuchi and Tangla areas, where four people were killed, sources added.

While a minor boy named Natir Ali died on the spot in Sonitpur district.
