4 Gunfights in 4 Days Leave 8 Dead in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 27: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in a gunfight with troops in the Sopore town of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday. The firefight was the 4th in four days and at least eight militants have died in these fire fights.

A police official said army and policemen laid siege around Nowpora area in Sopore, some 54 kms North of Srinagar after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

“After plugging off all the possible escape routes, the soldiers zeroed-in a residential house of one Bashir Ahmad Tantray and asked the militants present inside to surrender and lay down the weapons. The militants turned down the offer and engaged the search party in the fire fight. The fierce exchange of fire continued for some time during which both the militants were killed,” he said.

He said the soldiers did not suffer any loss of life or injuries. “No damage was caused to the civilian property,” he said.

He identified the deceased militants as Omais and Qari Anas of Pakistan from Lashker-Toiba.

The encounter was the 4th fire fight between militants and troops in last one week. At least eight militants have been killed in the encounters.
