4,834 Militants Killed in North East India Over Past 12 Years

The North Eastern region of India has been troubled by decades of insurgency where at least 4,834 militants of different outfit groups in seven states in the region were killed in counter insurgency operations in the past 12 years.

From 2000-2012, at least 1909 militants were killed in Manipur, while 1777 were killed in Assam, 536 in Nagaland, 307 in Tripura, 105 in Arunachal Pradesh and 9 in Mizoram.

Several militant groups are active in the region and they are still continuing their unlawful activities.

According to a report, in a single year, the highest number of militants killed in Manipur was in 2008.

In Manipur, 341 militants were killed in 2008, while 161 killed in the year 2001, 101 in 2002, 148 in 2003, 127 in 2004, 143 in 2005, 141 in 2006, 218 in 2007, 321 in 2009, 104 in 2010, 30 in 2011 and 74 in the year 2012.

Meanwhile, 283 militants of different outfit groups were killed during the counter insurgency operations in Assam in 2001.

In Assam, a total of 1777 militants killed during the period, in which, 275 killed in the year 2002, 281 in 2003, 136 in 2004, 83 in 2005, 43 in 2006, 149 in 2007, 133 in 2008, 196 in 2009, 98 in 2010, 45 in 2011 and 55 in 2012.

“Most of the militants of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were killed during the counter insurgency operations,” a top official of Assam Police said.

In Meghalaya, 191 militants killed during the period in which, 8 in the year 2001, 17 in 2002, 27 in 2003, 23 in 2004, 26 in 2005, 17 in 2006, 13 in 2007, 12 in 2008, 4 in 2009, 17 in 2010, 8 in 2011 and 19 in 2012.

The report said 63 militants killed in Tripura in 2004which is the highest no in a single year.

During the period, a total of 307 militants killed in Tripura, in which 42 in 2001, 38 in 2002, 61 in 2003, 31 in 2005, 30 in 2006, 21 in 2007, 17 in 2008, 1 each in 2009 and 2010 and 2 in 2012.

It has been reported that no militants have been killed in Mizoram since 2009.
