Mining Tragedy Kills More Than 200 in Turkey

One Of The Worst Coal Mine Disasters In History

A mining tragedy in western province in Turkey has claimed the lives of more than 200 coal miners after a fire broke out following an explosion in a power distribution unit.

Rescue operations are still underway to save hundreds more miners that were still trapped in the mine.

Media reports say, the accident occurred two kilometers below the surface that caused a power cut leading to the mine’s elevator stopping working.

Most of the victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning. More than seventy miners were injured and hospitalized.

Around 700 workers were inside the mine when the accident took place.

US Saddened By The Loss Of Life In The Mining Disaster

In a press statement in Washington DC, Deputy Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said the United States expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives in the tragic mining accident in Soma.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those suffering during this difficult time.” – Ms. Harf

Ms. Harf said the United States stands with Turkey during this period of national mourning.

Rescue Operation Is Over

According to media reports, rescue workers have completed the desperate hunt in Turkey’s mining disaster after retrieving the bodies of the last two missing miners. Around 500 miners escaped and were rescued from the mining disaster.
