25 Countries Agreed to Resettle Syrian Refugees

Resettlement Makes Big Difference For Syrian Refugees

As human suffering continues to torment Syria, the United States of America announced this week that it will lead in the resettlement of Syrian refugees together with 25 other nations around the world.

In her remarks in Switzerland, Assistant Secretary Anne C. Richard for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, emphasized that resettlement offers not just an escape, but a chance to start over.

She highlighted that resettlement can help, one person at a time – to bring that suffering to an end in war-stricken Syria.

In addition, Ms. Richard explained that resettlement cannot replace what refugees have lost or erase what they have endured. But it can renew hope and help restart lives.

Human Suffering Prevalent In Syria

According to Ms. Richard, the Syrian crisis led to flow of refugees that has grown to a mass exodus. In fact, countries hosting refugees in the region have contended with overcrowded hospitals and schools, particularly in Lebanon and Jordan.

After three years, people have continue to die and the human suffering in Syria seems endless. More than 130,000 Syrians were killed and with 6.8 million in need of aid inside the country, 250,000 of whom are trapped in besieged areas.

The existence of barrel bombs, arbitrary detentions, systematic use of torture and the use of starvation as a weapon of war continue to hurt the nation.

US To Lead The Settlement Of Syrian Refugees

According to Ms. Richard, the US is reviewing some 9,000 recent UNHCR referrals from Syria.

The US is receiving roughly a thousand new referrals each month, and it expects admissions from Syria to surge in 2015 and beyond.

In addition, the US applauds the 25 countries that have agreed to resettle Syrian refugees, including some who will be accepting UNHCR refugee referrals for the first time.

The United States accepts the majority of all UNHCR referrals from around the world.

In 2013, the US reached its goal of resettling nearly 70,000 refugees from almost 70 countries.
