Citizens of Republic of Azerbaijan Celebrate Their National Day

The citizens of Republic of Azerbaijan today celebrated the anniversary of the founding of the country in 1918.

The first independent republic of Azerbaijan was proclaimed on May 28, 1918. The country is a constitutional republic with broad presidential powers. President is elected by popular vote for a 5-year term.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sent her best wishes to the people of Azerbaijan as they celebrate Republic Day.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov and his spouse with the President of the United States Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

At DC, Ms. Clinton announces that she is looking forward to her trip to Baku in a few days where she will have the chance to talk to civil society and government leaders about Azerbaijan’s challenges and opportunities, and how the United States can support a brighter future for both our people.

Both countries will discuss new ways to partner together to promote regional security and stability, enhance energy security, and strengthen economic and political reforms, she stated.

“As you celebrate your national day, know that the United States stands with you. Congratulations and best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous year to come.” -Ms. Clinton

On March this year, the United States of America and Azerbaijan celebrated 20th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

Both countries have been building on those bonds in the 20 years since diplomatic relations were established.

Where international security is concerned, American soldiers, Azerbaijani soldiers, have stood shoulder to shoulder in Kosovo, in Iraq.

The United States is very grateful for Azerbaijan’s continued commitment to the allied effort in Afghanistan where Azerbaijani troops have served with great distinction.

Azerbaijan has also served as a vital transportation route for supporting NATO operations in Afghanistan with thousands of U.S. military flights transiting over Azerbaijan on the way to Afghanistan.

Azerbaijan ahs recently taken a seat on the UN Security Council for a two year term, assuming very important responsibilities for promoting global security.

Azerbaijan has also played a critical role in enforcing international sanctions against Iran, another high priority for this administration.

The United States also shares Azerbaijan’s goal of establishing a southern corridor in natural gas exports to Europe.

On December 2011, members of Congress, State Department officials, American business leaders, and leaders of Azeri-American organizations came together for the inaugural event of the Azerbaijan America Alliance, a new non-profit organization dedicated to forging closer ties between the peoples of America and Azerbaijan.

The United States Government (USG) assistance in Azerbaijan includes support for adoption of economic reforms to promote stability in the region.
