Iranian Regime Takes Advantage of Iraq Unrest to Plot Against Camp Liberty

While Iraq spirals down into chaos and unrest, the Iranian regime is aiming to take advantage of the situation to strike at its main and most feared opposition.

In a statement published on July 26, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) revealed new information received from within Iran pertaining to new conspiracies by the Iranian regime against the residents of Camp Liberty, Iraq. Nearly 3,000 opposition members reside in Camp Liberty under prison-like conditions and comprehensive siege by the Iraqi government.

According to the NCRI, the commander of the notorious Quds Force Qassem Suleimani, held discreet meetings with top Iraqi officials, accompanied by a number of Iranian regime authorities, including Secretary of Security Council Ali Shamkhani and his top advisor, Abolfazl Zohrevand.

The main demand the Iranian regime elements requested from the Iraqi government was to mount pressure on the residents of Camp Liberty and create an increasingly intolerable and insecure environment for the opposition members.

Zohrevand is infamous for his coordination of foreign terrorism. His May 15, 2013 trip to Iraq was followed by a rocket attack on Camp Liberty by Iraqi forces, a fact that has raised concern over the implications of his recent meetings with Iraqi authorities.

Elsewhere, the Iranian regime has taken advantage of the lack of UN and U.S. presence in Camp Liberty to increase the pressure against the residents, causing obstructions in medical services and preventing the entrance of security necessities. Also, Iraqi forces affiliated with the Iranian regime have been busy plundering the goods and property of the residents, which had been left in Camp Ashraf in Diyala province according to an agreement with the Iraqi government, the UN and the U.S.

Under such circumstances, the United Nations and the United States must immediately transfer all of the camp residents either to Europe or to the U.S., consistent with their commitments and international law. And until then, they must undertake urgent measures to ensure the protection of the residents at Camp Liberty, by stationing a unit of Blue Helmets there.

Here is a video of the massacre that took place in Camp Ashraf, April 8, 2011, after similar warnings were ignored by the US and UN.
