Ma Ying-Jeou Re-Elected President of Taiwan

The United States of America today congratulated Ma Ying-jeou for winning re-election fight on Saturday.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou beat his populist-minded opponent Tsai Ing-wen. With about 90 percent of the vote counted, Ma had 51 percent with Tsai had 46.3 percent.

U.S. Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said Taiwan has once again held a free and fair election.

“The people of Taiwan should be proud of this latest milestone for their democracy. We share with the Taiwan people a profound interest in the continuation of cross-Strait peace and stability.” -Ms. Nuland

She stated that the United States is looking forward to working with Mr. Ma and Taiwan’s leaders from both parties to ensure that our strong economic and people-to-people relationship is maintained.

Ma was elected Mayor of Taipei in 1998 and re-elected in 2002. He was elected Chairman of the Kuomintang on July 16, 2005. Ma won the presidency by 58.45% of the popular vote in the presidential election of 2008.
