Secretary Clinton Congratulates Citizens of Samoa on Their Independence Day

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton today congratulated the citizens of Samoa on their Independence Day.

“On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of the Independent State of Samoa as you celebrate the 49th anniversary of your nation’s independence this June 1.”-Ms. Clinton

According to Ms. Clinton, the United States and Samoa share a warm friendship based on mutual interests and mutual respect, strengthened by their common goals in the Pacific region. She added that both countries are working together to promote economic development, reduce the effects of climate change and boost regional rule of law.

Ms. Clinton emphasized that throughout the last half century, Americans of Samoan descent have contributed in numerous ways to American culture. Ms. Clinton shared that during the Korean and Vietnam wars, Samoans stood side by side with other American soldiers.

Ms. Clinton stated that today the Samoans are leaders in the political arena and on the athletic field. They are influencing music and dance. She also commended the Samoans for positively contributing to the American experience.

“The United States looks forward to continuing to strengthen this important relationship and we wish all Samoans around the world a happy and prosperous year.”-Ms. Clinton
