A Tanzanian journalist was killed while reporting on a demonstration in the Nyololo village in the central region of Iringa in Tanzania.

Reports say Mr. Daudi Mwangosi, 40, was a correspondent for the television station Channel Ten and the Chairperson of the Iringa Press Club.

Today, the head of the United Nations agency tasked with defending press freedom expressed condemnation on the recent killing of a Tanzanian journalist.

Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova also urged an investigation into the case.

“I am deeply concerned by the killing of Daudi Mwangosi and call on the authorities to investigate his death and bring those responsible to justice.” -Ms. Bokova

Almost half of the population in Tanzania is under 1.

Ms. Bokova stresses that it is essential for democracy and rule of law that journalists be allowed to carry out their duties and exercise their right to free speech safely.

Mwangosi, who began his journalism career in 2005, was elected chairman of the Iringa Press Club in 2011, according to local journalists. He has left behind a wife and four children.
