Somali Parliament to Extend Mandate for Another Three Years

Members of Parliament in Somali have voted today to extend their mandate for another three years. The decision and vote were made in a meeting today in Mogadishu.

The meeting was chaired by Sharif Hassan, the speaker of parliament. More than 435 lawmakers attended the vote and 421 voted in favour of the extension of the mandate.

The parliament members also announced that they would continue their duties with credibility and integrity as lawmakers.

“Parliament will carry out extensive reforms in order to serve the people of Somalia,” said the speaker of parliament.

The parliament took the vote after Mahiga, the UN special representative to Somalia, claimed earlier that the mandate of the government would end in August and would not be extended.
