World Cup: Shock in Final Game of Opening Matches – Spain Defeated 1-0

Spain, many people’s favorites for the World Cup, got their campaign underway against Switzerland this afternoon as the world watched in awe. The pre-match talk was all about how much Spain could win by, but by the end people were wondering if the European champions even had what it takes.

They controlled the first half but struggled to get a proper hold on the game. They lacked any aerial ability and the Swiss were not allowing them to play it along the floor. Spain employed different tricks and tactics for set-pieces but they couldn’t get the goal they needed and went in 0-0 at the break.

Spain continued to dominate in the second half but with seven minutes played they were hit on the counterattack by the Swiss who somehow managed to scramble the ball over the line, with Former Manchester City man Fernandes getting the final touch and putting his team 1-0 up.

Spain pushed for an equalizer and subbed on Navas and Torres who added an extra dimension to the game. With twenty minutes to go Alonso nearly broke the frame of the goal when he smashed a shot off the crossbar as Spain threw everything they had at the Swiss.

Switzerland looked decent in defense though and very nearly made it 2-0 when Derdiyok drifted through the Spanish defense and poked a shot past the ‘keeper and against the post. Switzerland continued to keep out the Spanish attacks and they claimed a fantastic and surprising victory here, sending Spain to the bottom of the group along with Honduras.

The Spanish have now made things very difficult for themselves whilst Switzerland have put themselves in a prime position to qualify from this group. A great end to the first round of matches. Don’t forget to check out the tips for the next round of matches which begin tonight back in Group A.
