World Cup Draw – England Expected to Make It to Last Eight

World Cup 2010

The World Cup draw took place a short time ago in South Africa, to decide which teams will be playing each other. The groups are displayed below at the bottom of the page.

Should England win their group (Group C), they would face the team that comes second in group D. If the teams should play to form (quite often a big if for England), England should make it to the last eight in the competition.

What happens to England later, if they get that far, is then in the lap of the Gods, or in the case of a certain player from Argentina some years ago: “The hand of God”

The USA certainly has a good chance of progressing, in what might be considered one of the easier groups.

I would expect France to make it through their group, with either Uruguay or South Africa. Argentina has been struggling lately, but if they can recover their form, they should win group B. It is difficult to predict who will be runners up.

Germany are favourites to win group D, with perhaps Serbia taking the second spot (and maybe facing England in the last 16?).

Netherlands and Denmark should lead group E, and Italy shouldn’t have any trouble winning group F.

Brazil play in what might be considered the toughest group, facing Portugal and a talented African side from the Ivory Coast.

Finally, in group H, Spain should overcome Switzerland, but Chile is not without a chance.

Spain is expected to be the overall favourite, followed by Brazil. England fans will be hoping for the best, but at odds of 11-2 the bookies are not being over generous. If you are looking for a safer bet, Brazil at around 5-1 might be a wiser choice?
