The battle for fourth heated up tonight with both Aston Villa and Manchester City involved in midweek games. With Spurs playing in the FA Cup (a 3-1 victory over Fulham) they couldn’t watch what was going on but the roars around White Hart Lane certainly indicated that the Spurs fans were keeping a close eye on the scoreboard (which provided he Premiership scores for them) whilst watching their own team play.
Those roars were all in favour of Everton who were playing away to fourth spot rivals Manchester City tonight. They went 1-0 up when Cahill headed in following a free-kick and they doubled their lead with just five minutes left; Arteta slotting past Given. A great win for Everton as they look to climb up the table but a poor result from Man City whose form has been up and down recently.
Aston Villa’s form has also been dodgy and that continued tonight. Villa are also fighting for fourth but will be rueing their chances after drawing 1-1 at home to Sunderland, a game they were expected to win. Villa dominated early on but were hit on the counter and Campbell chipped the ‘keeper to put Sunderland in front on twenty minutes. Carew’s equalizer came on the half hour mark but Villa struggled with their finishing and couldn’t get more from this game.
Chelsea were one of the few top of the table sides to enjoy their game tonight. They were playing away to bottom of the league Portsmouth in what was deemed as a difficult game with Portsmouth fighting hard for the points. But Chelsea kept their cool with Drogba and Malouda both bagging braces before Lampard wrapped things up on 90 minutes to gift The Blues a 5-0 victory.
Blackburn were also victorious tonight. A double from their star player Dunn helped them overcome Birmingham who did manage a goal from Mcfadden but didn’t do enough to stop Rovers.
