Elks National Hoop Shoot Contest to Begin

The “North Carolina Elks Hoop Shoot” contests, sponsored by Raleigh Elks Lodge, will be held on January 17, 2009. Carolina Pines Recreation Center is hosting the event, according to Ian VanBuskirk, local chairman.

All across our nation, Elks Lodges will hold contests for upwards of 3 million contestants. The field will be 76 youngsters by the time the finals are held at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA in April of 2009.

In order to compete, a boy or girl must be between the ages of 8 & 13. In addition, they must have won a Hoop Shoot contest at their School, Recreation Center, or Boys or Girls Club. At their local Hoop Shoot Contest, the Elks will select the six best Free Throw Shooters who will then advance to the District Finals the following weekend.

The Six District Champs will move on to the North Carolina State Finals. Our State Champs will then advance to Fredrick, MD, for the Regional Contest.

Earlier this year, winner Jacob Hartle, from Rural Hall, NC, made all 25 of his free throw attempts at the National Finals to win the Boys age 10-11 bracket. Hopefully, several of our North Carolina kids will reach the National Finals again this year.
