FRC Action Urges Senators to Vote No on Kagan Confirmation

President Obama has proposed Elena Kagan as Solicitor General of the United States. Kagan is seen as much further left than even Obama, and conservatives are not happy, urging Senators to vote NO on the Kagan confirmation.

The United States Senate has scheduled a vote on the confirmation of Elena Kagan as Solicitor General of the United States, for this afternoon. Solicitor General of the United States is a post so powerful that it is often seen as being equivalent to a Supreme Court Justice.

The Solicitor General has even been called “the 10th Supreme Court Justice.”

Conservative group, Family Research Council Action urged the full Senate to reject her confirmation. The group, and other conservatives, worry that Obama is trying to stack the courts with progressive voices. They suspect these judges will carry out judicial activism.

President Tony Perkins released the following statement :

“Elena Kagan is well outside the mainstream of public opinion and to the left even of President Obama. As the Dean of Harvard Law School, she fought to bar military recruiters from the campus, thus trampling on students’ constitutional rights and denying them the opportunity to serve our country. She carried her fight against the military all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which unanimously struck down her claim that elite schools have a right to taxpayer largess while simultaneously barring the military.

“The Office of the Solicitor General is so powerful that it is seen as a bellwether for future Supreme Court nominations. The appointments of Elena Kagan as Solicitor General and David Hamilton’s to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals provide disturbing evidence that President Obama will foster a philosophy of judicial activism and hostility to sound jurisprudence on issues of life and religious liberty.

“We urge the Senate to reject Elena Kagan’s nomination as Solicitor General of the United States and encourage President Obama to nominate a replacement who is more in-line with the views of the American people.”

Born in New York, Kagan was Associate White House Counsel for Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1996. Interestingly, she co-authored a memo in 1997, in which she urged Bill Clinton to support a ban on late-term abortions.
