Free Seminar for Advocates of Military Legal Issues

Thomas M. Cooley Law School and the Michigan National Guard will be holding a free legal seminar in Grayling, Michigan on Friday, October 21, 2011.

The event will feature Lt. Col. John Wojcik of Grand Ledge, Michigan. Also presenting will be Heather Spielmaker, director of Cooley Law School’s Center for Ethics, Service and Professionalism. She was recently honored by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for developing pro-bono programs to assist current soldiers and veterans.

Wojcik serves as general counsel to the Michigan National Guard and recently returned home after a tour in Afghanistan. The seminar is for attorneys and volunteers who wish to serve returning veterans. The Service to Soldiers program will highlight the legal benefits from the Service Members Relief Act (SMRA) and the Uniformed Services Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA). Also topics to be covered will be military estate planning, family law, property, rental contracts and post-deployment issues.

The Service to Soldiers program started in 2007 and is the only civilian advocacy specifically designed to assist with the immediate legal needs of military personnel.

Cooley Law School is the largest law school in the nation. Founded in 1972 by former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Brennan, Cooley has just opened a new campus in Tampa. Florida. Other Juris Doctor programs and master of law degrees offered by Cooley are available at campuses in Lansing, Auburn Hills, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
