Majority of Americans Want Federal Tax Reform

opinions

There is one yearly anniversary that most Americans love to hate because it causes them so much pain: tax time.

And around this time, there are calls (usually by email) to not pay any tax or to reform the tax code to make it fair and easy.

The Pew Research Center just completed a poll on this very subject.

With the April 15 filing deadline approaching fast, Pew released the results of their survey.

59 percent of respondents think “there is so much wrong with the federal tax system that Congress should completely change it.”

No surprise there.

38 percent of respondents say the system “works pretty well” and requires “only minor changes.”

Are these people crazy?

Pew says Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say the federal tax system should be changed completely.

72 percent of conservative Republicans would support a major overhaul, plus 63 percent of Independents, but only 48 percent of Democrats.

64 percent of all respondents think some corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

61 percent say some wealthy people don’t pay their fair share.

Now the poppa bear, momma bear and baby bear question:

40 percent say they pay more than their fair share, 53 percent say they pay about the right amount, and less than 4 percent think they pay less than their fair share.

What? Do they mean they want to pay more?

It is probably little surprise that respondents earning more than $100,000 a year are most likely to say the tax system is not fair at all – 30 percent. Only 19 percent of respondents earning less than $30,000 agree the tax system is not fair.

Rand Paul doesn’t think the tax system is fair. The Kentucky senator thinks a simple, flat tax would be best. He also aims to eliminate the IRS.

Dwight L. Schwab Jr. is a moderate conservative who looks at all sides of a story, then speaks his mind. He has written more than 3500 national political and foreign affairs columns. His BS in journalism from the University of Oregon, with minors in political science and American history stands him in good stead for his writing.

Publishing

Dwight has 30-years in the publishing industry, including ABC/Cap Cities and International Thomson. His first book, “Redistribution of Common Sense – Selective Commentaries on the Obama Administration 2009-2014,” was published in July, 2014. “The Game Changer – America’s Most Stunning Presidential Election in History,” was published in April 2017.

Location

Dwight is a native of Portland, Oregon, and now a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area.
