In the Western world, female rights have come on leaps and bounds. There is still discrimination and toxic masculinity and we still have a gender pay gap, but we’ve come a long way and improvements are being made.

The same can’t be said for other countries though. In some parts of the world women are heavily repressed and treated as second-class citizens. These are some of the worst countries to be a female and they prove that the human race has a long way to go before we achieve true equality.

India

India is often seen as a spiritual and peace-loving country, with many young Americans flocking here to “find themselves” amongst the many temples, gurus and religious sites. However, India has a darker side and is often considered to be the worst country for women.

Not only is violence against women higher here than anywhere else, but they also have a serious issue with women being forced into slavery and millions can’t afford basic sanitation.

There are some groups trying to bring about change and for the most part India is a beautiful country with a fantastic history, culture, and people. There are just a lot of asshole apples trying to spoil the bunch.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is often considered to be the worst country in the world for women. It has terrible reputation because some of their draconian laws became common knowledge in the US. However, while repression is high, violence against women is actually very low compared to other countries on this list.

As discussed on this page from an assault & battery lawyer, domestic violence here isn’t that less common than it is in the US. In fact, due to the increased reports that have followed the MeToo movement, the USA often ranks in the top 10 for countries with the worst violence against women.

Of course, that doesn’t make Saudi Arabia’s laws any less ridiculous or extreme and women in this country struggle to make a living, leave the house, or even drive without a man hovering over them.

Pakistan

Pakistan has consistently been ranked as one of the top five worst countries for women. Honor killings are common and women are often tortured or starved as a form of punishment for minor indiscretions. It is very hard for a woman to earn a living and to survive on their own means in this country and it’s showing no signs of getting better.

Yemen

Violence against women is common in Yemen and female healthcare is also very poor here, with many women failing to get the care they need when they are pregnant or when they have gynecological conditions.

Somalia

When it comes to domestic violence, Somalia ranks below many of the other countries on this list. However, they have one of the highest rates for punishment and cruelty in the name of religion or tradition, with many girls and women being forced into marriage, stoned, or even being attacked with acid.
