Ignoring Immigration Laws Exposes Our Nation to Variety of Serious Threats

On Tuesday, November 22nd, I had the distinct privilege and pleasure of joining Congressman Lou Barletta at Wilkes University, located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to address an audience assembled on that university’s campus to discuss immigration.

Copies of three newspaper articles that reported on the event at Wilkes University are attached below.

We were both invited to participate in that event by Brian McElwee a reporter for the Examiner who, several months ago, interviewed me and subsequently posted an article an article in which I was profiled. (Profiling is not necessarily a bad thing!)

Here is a link to Brian’s piece:

Brian’s activism and commitment to his responsibility as a citizen of this nation is commendable and could serve as a role model for all Americans!

I have known Lou for a number of years and first met him when, as the mayor of a nearby town, Hazleton, he decided to enact local ordinances to penalize employers who knowingly hired illegal aliens and landlords who intentionally rented apartments to illegal aliens. He was motivated to take these measures when several shootings were determined to have been carried out by illegal aliens in his community who were gang members. Exacerbating the situation was the fact that the federal government, under the George W. Bush administration failed to enforce the immigration laws.

I was called as the final witness at the federal trial that ensued when the ACLU filed a lawsuit in an effort to block the implementation of that ordinance.

Lou Barletta is now a member of the United States Congress and represents the residents of Hazleton in Congress where he is continuing with his efforts to get our nation’s immigration laws enforced. At present he has proposed legislation that would block aid to those municipalities that create sanctuaries for illegal aliens.

Several weeks ago I addressed the issue of Sanctuary Cities and why I am so opposed to them in a commentary I wrote for CAPS (Californians for Population Stabiliazation). Here is a link to that commentary:

Lou Barletta has also come out in opposition to HR 2885- “The Legal Workforce Act” because while it would mandate the use of E-Verify for all employers in the United States, it would prohibit state and city governments from enforcing immigration laws. In essence, H.R. 2885 would hand over to the federal government total and complete sole authority to enforce immigration laws at a time when the federal government has demonstrated contempt for those very laws.

I share Lou’s opposition to H.R. 2885 until and unless the pre-emption clause is removed from that flawed legislation. If you have any question about this bill being flawed, you only consider that H.R. 2885 is whole-heartedly supported by the Chamber of Commerce, an organization that has fought to expand the dangerous and wrong-headed Visa Waiver Program and has a long history of opposing the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws. It is also noteworthy that the United States Supreme Court has, thus far, issued rulings in support of the right of states and municipalities to enforce immigration laws that parallel the federal immigration statutes.

Lou Barletta demonstrated true leadership when he was the mayor of Hazleton, PA and is continuing to demonstrate leadership in his freshman term as a member of Congress.

It is time for the citizens of our nation to contact the politicians who are responsible for their failures to live up to their oaths of office and enforce our immigration laws.

The goal must be to make it clear to our nation’s leaders, on all levels, to come to terms with the fundamental fact that nation’s borders and our immigration laws exist to protect our nation and our citizens from aliens whose presence has the potential to have a serious adverse impact. Ignoring those laws exposes our nation and our citizens to a variety of serious threats and challenges ranging from national security and criminal justice and public safety to the economy, the environment, healthcare and education!

We are often told that our nation is a nation of immigrants- what must be remembered is that the difference between an immigrant and an illegal aliens is comparable to the difference between a houseguest and burglar!

A country without secure borders can no more stand than can a house without walls!

If our country is to survive and if our children and their children are to get their share of the “American Dream” the citizens of this nation must take their citizenship seriously!

We the People must be the best citizens we can be, citizens who are worthy of the gallantry demonstrated by our valiant men and women in the military, law enforcement and firefighters, who routinely go in harm’s way in defense of this nation and our citizens.

My goal in writing this and other commentaries is to point out our nations many failings *before* more victims pay the ultimate price for the incompetence and ineptitude of our government.

The first step in problem-solving is to first identify the problems and vulnerabilities and then devise strategies to overcome them.

If you find yourself to be in agreement with this commentary, I ask that you forward it to as many of your friends and family members as possible and encourage them to do the same. We need to create a “Bucket Brigade of Truth!”

The practice of good citizenship does not end in the voting booth, it only begins there.

I am encouraged that more and more of us, *We the People*, are not willing to simply sit on the sidelines anymore!

For far too long our citizens demonstrated apathy which emboldened elected representatives to all but ignore the needs of the average American citizen in a quest for massive campaign funds and the promises of votes to be ostensibly delivered by special interest groups.

I believe our nation’s is greatly benefited by the rich diversity of our people which is why I could never imagine living anywhere except New York City, arguably the most diverse city in our nation if not, in fact, the world. However, my idea of diversity most certainly does not include members of MS-13, the Mexican drug cartels or members of other transnational gangs or members of al-Qaeda!

If our government’s failures to secure our nation’s borders and effectively enforce our immigration laws concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional “Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!

All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!

We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.

This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!

You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Lead, follow or get out of the way!
