Missouri River Breaches Levees in Two Places: Hundreds Evacuate

Breaking News: Two levees along the Missouri River near the Iowa city of Hamburg and 72km down-river another levee failed in north-west Missouri’s Holt County letting millions of gallons of water rush through at the rate of 1.1 million gallons per second.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the cities of Hamburg and Big Lake as well as all surrounding areas. Emergency officials are urging residents to not drive or attempt to travel unless it is an extreme emergency.

A shelter has been opened in a former Dana College dormitory located in Blair for residents relocated as a result of rising flood waters along the Missouri River. Residents who need assistance, please call the Flood Relief Hotline at 402-426-8881 or visit http://www.blairnebraska.org.
