NBC Renews ‘Special Victims Unit’

Is ‘Law & Order’ Coming Back?

Before there was ‘CSI’ and ‘NCIS’ on CBS, there was ‘Law & Order’ from Dick Wolf, which premiered on NBC 25 years ago about the criminal justice system divided by the police and the district attorneys who investigates – and prosecutes – crimes in hopes of bringing the bad guys to justice.

Since then, a franchise brand was born with spin-offs including ‘Special Victims Unit,’ which has been renewed for a 17th season with remaining original member Mariska Hargitay, who is also one of the producers. Hargitay, who has directed ‘SVU’ twice, won a Golden Globe and Emmy for her role as Sgt. Olivia Benson, a veteran detective who leads a team of dedicated cops investigating sex crimes in New York.

Now, Deadline is reporting that NBC is looking to reboot the original ‘Law & Order’ as a limited series like the upcoming ‘Heroes: Reborn’ and last summer’s ‘Live Another Day;’ both were reboots of fan favorites ’24’ and ‘Heroes.’ In other words, Jack Bauer had super-competition in saving the world from the forces of evil every Monday night.

‘Law & Order,’ which aired from 1990 to 2010, starred Dann Florek, the late Jerry Orbach, S. Epatha Merkenson, Sam Waterston, Steven Hill, Michael Moriarty, Paul Sorvino, former Bond girl Carey Lowell and so on, as well as launching the careers of several such as Chris Noth, Benjamin Bratt, Angie Harmon, Jill Hennessy, Jesse L. Martin, Anthony Anderson, and Elisabeth Rohm.

Since ‘Law & Order,’ Wolf went from taking a bite out of crime in the Big Apple to taking a bite out of the Windy City with a new franchise. Not only are ‘Chicago Fire’ and ‘Chicago PD’ renewed for next season, but Wolf is already in the process of developing another spin-off entitled ‘Chicago Med.’
