Devine Devine Entertainment, Inc. is proud to present PIECES OF ME, an evening of original poetry and songs, from multiple award-winning Loretta Devine, coming to Stage 52 beginning September 11th.

Ms. Devine is 5-time winner of the NAACP Image Awards, 2007 Black Film Festival’s Best Actress Award, an Independent Spirit Awards Nominee, and winner of the LA Women Theatre Festival’s Integrity Award.

About The Show

Multiple award-winning actor, singer and poet Loretta Devine brings an inventive, personal and socially conscious evening of poetry and songs to the stage. A unique voyage with Loretta Devine through her original saucy songs and lustful poetry – mostly true, some lies for color – and all for your entertainment pleasure. Directed by Adleane Hunter.

PIECES OF ME is about love – familial love, first love, romantic love, obsessive love, uncommitted love, Love of life. It’s all about L-O-V-E!

Show Centerpiece

The performance centerpiece is 4 sizzling poems, a tetralogy (also called a quadrilogy).

The first is called “Panties and Pearls.”

(Excerpt) Panties and Pearls that’s what she wore She was not a whore – standing so graceful when he’d open the door – to lay her down – as he’d done before . . .

The second is entitled “Love Spent on an Older Man.”

(Excerpt) Hold me fast – Lock me in – squeeze a moment dry for me – Erase my memory of bitter sweet passion – act older young boy Don’t be nasty – stop grinning before you please me. …

Continuing the theme of love and its complications, the third is “Sneaking”:

(Excerpt) After it was all over I creep back to my wife and I continued without the magic to live my life

And the fourth is “The Wife’s Why,” upon the passing of her husband:

(Excerpt) Hidden in his hobby room … that only he was … allowed to use … Secrets of a love … Here in her home … Secrets of his lover He’d unwrapped … and smelled … and held so Tight. . .

The evening contains several other bittersweet themes, including a piece dealing with AIDS entitled “Anita is Asleep.” Woven together original with music, PIECES OF ME will move, touch and entertain as only Loretta Devine can.

PIECES OF ME runs September 11 through October 3.

Performances are at Stage 52 at 5299 W. Washington Blvd, 90016, Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 3 PM and 7 PM. Tickets are $40 Opening Night, Sept. 11th (champagne reception included); General admission is $30 Saturdays & Sun. Matinees; $27.50 Sunday at 7 PM. Running time is 90 minutes with no intermission and concessions available.

About Loretta Devine

ACTOR, SINGER, POET, and CREATOR of wearable art, Ms. Devine has created indelible roles on Broadway, in theatre, in film and television. She created the role of Lorell in Michael Bennett’s DREAMGIRLS and captured attention; Lillian in Bob Fosse’s BIG DEAL and LaLa in George Wolfe’s COLORED MUSEUM as well as Ma Rainey in August Wilson’s MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM.

She is best known for her roles in films including WAITING TO EXHALE, FUNNY VALENTINE, KINGDOM COME, PREACHER’S WIFE, KINGS RANSOM, HOODLUM, THIS CHRISTMAS, WOMAN THY ARE LOOSED, DREAMGIRLS (the movie) and CRASH; her television roles are too numerous to list but memorable among them is BOSTON PUBLIC, ELI STONE and GREY’s ANATOMY.

Look for her in the movie theatres in the coming months in LOTTERY TICKET, POLITICS OF LOVE, and just finished filming Tyler Perry’s FOR COLORED GIRLS… Loretta is currently shooting JUMP THE BROOM, with Angela Bassett, produced by Bishop T. D. Jakes.

Loretta was born in Houston, Texas. A graduate of the University of Houston, she received her MFA from Brandeis University in Theatre Arts and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from her Alma Mater, The University of Houston.

She is a five time N.A.A.C.P. Image Award Winner, Independent Spirit Awards Nominee, Winner of the Black Film Festival’s Best Actress Award 2007 for independent film DIRTY LAUNDRY; the Los Angeles Women Theatre Festival Integrity Award in 2007.
