Oscar Race Heats Up With 15 Films to Compete for Best in Visual Effects

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week that 15 films have been selected as semifinalists for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 83rd Academy Awards, reports The Hollywood Sentinel’s Bruce Edwin.

The films are listed as follows in alphabetical order:

1. Alice in Wonderland

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

3. Clash of the Titans

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

5. Hereafter

6. Inception

7. Iron Man 2

8. The Last Airbender

9. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

10.Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”

11. Scott Pilgrim vs the World”

12. Shutter Island

13. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

14. Tron: Legacy”

15. Unstoppable

In early January, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the semifinalists, will narrow the list to seven.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
