Kwame Kilpatrick Sentencing Hearing

Kwame Kilpatrick’s sentencing hearing began 2pm Tuesday in the basement of Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, in which after he’ll be residing at Room 14J-4 in a large 15×10 cell of the Capias Unit at the Andrew C. Baird facility. The once-charismatic, media-prone former disgraced Mayor of Detroit pleaded guilty to two counts of felony obstruction of justice that includes a $1 million payment to Motor City in restitution and five years’ probation — during at that time — he cannot run for office.

Kilpatrick was on trial for lying under oath in a civil case: charged with eight counts that includes perjury, misconduct, and obstruction of justice. He denied ever having an affair with former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty in 2002 and 2003. However, sexually explicit messages between the two was published at The Detroit Free Press this January — contradicting their statements. Recently, The Detroit News released new messages from 650 pages Friday that continued and not only revealed more into Kwame’s affair with Beatty, but also other liaisons with several other women while still involved “secretly” with Beatty.

Following his sentencing hearing, Kwame will be dressed in a green jumpsuit with “Wayne County Jail” shown on the back; the process will last for two hours. He’ll be undergoing both a medical and psychological test before going to his cell, which will have a bathroom, a writing table, pay telephone and access to a television that he’ll have to provide. This will cost taxpayers $115 per day. According to jail officials, Kwame will be paying $60 per day due to his ability to pay.

Kwame will be sentenced to 120 days at the Baird facility, but if he shows signs of good behavior, it could be 100 days.
