Downtown Art Walk

The free, self-guided, public art phenomenon known as The Downtown Art Walk brings together art lovers and community friends to the ever evolving downtown Los Angeles. November 14th, 2013 was the latest Downtown Art Walk, which offered The City of Los Angeles and its massive population the chance to come and see one of the fastest rising artists and art leaders in the U.S. – artist Caryl M. Christian-Levy.

Debut of The Vestment Series

The main event of the Downtown Art Walk, which has grown exponentially over the years not only in size, but as a money maker, featured lauded artist Caryl Christian-Levy, and was held in the upscale Art Walk Lounge building at 634 S. Spring Street, in downtown Los Angeles. This rising new area of downtown’s new rich and urban socialites was the location of the special launch party where Caryl Christian Levy’s exciting new work titled ‘The Vestment Series’ kicked off this now legendary event.

The now famous L.A. Downtown Art Walk is the biggest of its kind on the West Coast, and always proves to be exciting. With this month’s Downtown Art Walk featuring an artist of the caliber of Caryl M. Christian Levy, it proved to bring in a whole new level of buyers and dealers to the energy filled event which electrified the entire community of downtown L.A. during its run.

Buzz on the Streets

Young people were heard on the sidewalk talking as they got closer to the location, “That’s it?” And “Is that it?” As the buzz filled the streets with the VIP location of one of L.A.’s fastest rising top artists. Photographers swarmed the area, trying not to bump in to patrons on the sidewalk with their gear, as some made there way to the VIP Lounge where the artist greeted patrons and fans. Rock music from The Ramones blasted in the party reception area, where a cute girl with hot pink lipstick vetted art patrons to sign up for free giveaways, tennis shoes, and more.

The City of L.A.

The City of L.A. was on hand to support the event, and teaching people who drove in to see the artists work that- yes, L.A. really ‘does’ have a subway, and instructing of a contest to win a free mass transit pass. A nice girl seated near Caryl- representing a fancy loft was popular, by giving away free chocolates. At least three paparazzi’s milled about between the 6th and 7th Avenue’s trying to score the latest celebrity snapshots for the tabloids.

The Los Angeles Times

One of the biggest media outlets in the world – The Los Angeles Times was on hand as one of the hosts of the event, as well as was high end bottled water company Perrier, with both giving away free gift samples to patrons along side the featured artist, Caryl Christian Levy and her “Vestment Series.”

Models, Money, and MOCA

Near the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise School (FIDM), and less than a mile from MOCA (The Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles), The L.A. Downtown Art walk- held in the new thriving loft district, always attracts the hip and trendy, designers and models, and young and beautiful girls and guys who appreciate art that live nearby. Aside from the usual sex appeal and block party atmosphere the Downtown Art Walk has become known for however, this month of November was expected to bring in an added new type of audience; buyers and dealers with big money like never before, who not only love art, but who love to buy it. Those expectations did not disappoint, as MOCA patrons were seen side by side FIDM students filing in and out of the VIP Lounge to take in the artists work.

Celebrities Spotted

Young people poured in from the sidewalk, including new patrons of the arts, looking at and discussing the work of the artist, as well as consulting with Caryl Christian Levy regarding specific pieces on display. A limousine was spotted circling the area as a star from the film ‘Ender’s Game’ was rumored to be sneaking through another door. Caryl Christian Levy’s next participation in the L.A. Art Walk is already being talked about. L.A. never needs an excuse to have a great party, but adding a celebrity artist and a nearly a hundred galleries doesn’t hurt the cause either. Let’s hope the next one with this artist is soon.

Statement from the Artist

“As an artist, my painting and studio work comes from a Midwestern influence during the late 60’s and early 70’s. Most of us working during this decade saw the shift in object to process, the impact upon my studio art manifests in current installations created with my long time art collaborator and husband, John Levy. These monumental installations touch every aspect of my art and performance music background in addition to combining my tendency towards collaborative projects.”
