Black Panther Star Lupita Nyong’o and Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson have helped kids by teaching them the game of chess, which requires critical thinking, and planning one’s next move.
Chess champion Orrin C. Hudson, founder of the Be Someone mentoring organization based in DeKalb County in Georgia, told The Hollywood Sentinel today, that he was previously tapped to help promote Disney Studios film, “Queen of Katwe,” starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. The film tells the story of Phiona Mutesi, a 10-year-old girl from the slums of Katwe, Uganda, who learns to become a world chess champion. Lupita Nyong’o plays the mother of Phiona.

Orrin Hudson reported that he spent time touring cities including Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles to help promote the film. He then had a chance then to speak with Lupita Nyong’o during his visit to Los Angeles where they led a children’s chess workshop, which was very rewarding.
Orrin states, “It was wonderful working with Lupita. She was awesome. She was familiar with the game of chess because she learned at any early age.” Orrin Hudson, who praised Lupita for her Academy award-winning role in the film “12 Years A Slave,” said that he easily relates to the story of “Queen of Katwe,” with the Ugandan girl who becomes an international chess champion as a way of getting out of the slums. He adds, “I am so happy for Lupita’s continued success, and am looking forward to seeing her in Black Panther!”
A teacher taught Orrin Hudson how to play chess, just as a teacher taught Lupita’s character Phiona Mutesi, in the Disney film “Queen of Katwe,” how to play. Orrin Hudson grew up with 13 siblings in the housing projects of Birmingham, Alabama. “My story is the same as hers,” Orrin states. “We both got the winning edge in life because someone took the time out to change the trajectory of our lives.”
In the film, Phiona’s coach told her, “Sometimes the place you are used to is not the place you belong. You belong where you believe you belong. Where is that for you?” Orrin Hudson says his life is the same. He states, “Someone took time to guide and inspire me. It changed my life. By challenging and trusting me and helping me to understand that I can do anything I put my mind to. Now, it’s my time to pay it forward”

Just recently, “A Move In the Right Direction” Trevor Otts and Che Brown honored Orrin Checkmate Hudson with the Black CEO national community service award. Orrin says he is very appreciative, and humbled by the award, which will motivate him further to continue his life’s purpose to help children.

Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson, who was interviewed on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner radio program, announced that he was ready to take his Be Someone program on the road in an effort to reach more young people who are at risk of making the wrong moves in their lives. Hudson credits the game of chess for literally saving his life when he was a youngster and now he’s paying back. The chess star has a simple message that resonates with his young audiences. Learn to think before you act (Wake up, pants up, Step up, and the most important, never give up.
Hudson teaches that for every move there is a consequence. He feels there is no better way to get this point across than by teaching youngsters how to play chess. “Before they know what is happening to them, they are learning the concept of thinking ahead and what happens if they do this, that or the other,” he explained. “We all are natural competitors and we want to win, whether it is playing a game or succeeding in life and kids are no different. They just need to be taught how to win and that’s where I come in,” he adds.
In just a few hours I can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.
The Air Force veteran and former Alabama State Trooper realized he had a calling to save young people from themselves when he saw too many crime headlines announcing ruined lives because of poor decision making. “I knew I had to act. Now, several years later, I have trained more than 50,000 young people across the country that they can win instead of lose, succeed instead of fail if they but use their God-given thought process,” he says. “In just a few hours I can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.”
